How Long Does a Kitchen Renovation Take in Sydney?

Kitchen Renovation Timeline: Week by Week

The most common question we get: "How long will my kitchen renovation take?" The honest answer is 4–6 weeks for a standard renovation, 6–8 weeks for a complex or structurally involved project.

But there's an important distinction: the timeline starts from demolition day, not from when you sign the contract. Before work begins, your custom cabinetry needs to be manufactured — a process that typically takes 4–8 weeks depending on the manufacturer's queue.

Pre-Construction Phase (4–8 weeks before start)

  • Cabinet manufacturer produces your custom joinery to spec
  • Long-lead appliances ordered (European brands can take 4–6 weeks)
  • Any required council approvals obtained
  • Trades scheduled and programmed

On-Site Timeline

Week 1: Demolition of existing kitchen, disposal, and rough-in of plumbing and electrical services in their new positions.

Week 2: Wall patching, any structural work, and installation of cabinetry carcasses.

Week 3: Stone templating. The benchtop fabricator visits to measure the installed carcasses. Fabrication then takes 10–14 days.

Week 4: Tiling, splashback, and painting while waiting for stone.

Week 5: Benchtop and splashback installation. Fit-off of plumbing and electrical. Appliance installation.

Week 6: Final finishing, door adjustments, hardware, cleaning, and handover walkthrough.

What Causes Delays?

Stone wait times are the most common cause of delay. Client changes during construction add 1–2 weeks per significant change. Asbestos discovery (common in pre-1990 homes) requires licensed removal and a 7-day air clearance test.
