Kitchen Design for Sydney's Heritage Terrace Houses
The terrace house kitchen presents one of the most challenging — and most rewarding — briefs in Sydney renovation. Typically long and narrow (often 2.4–3m wide), with limited natural light and heritage constraints, these kitchens require a fundamentally different approach to design.
The Galley: King of the Terrace Kitchen
A galley layout — two parallel runs of cabinetry along opposing walls — is the most efficient use of a narrow terrace kitchen. It maximises bench space, keeps the workflow triangle tight, and allows for an unobstructed view through to the rear garden when you open the back door.
Opening Up with Rear Extensions
Many terrace renovations now remove the rear wall to create an open-plan kitchen/dining/living that flows to an outdoor terrace. This is the single most transformative renovation available to terrace owners — adding light, space and significant value.
Skylights
Where a full extension isn't possible, a skylight over the kitchen adds natural light dramatically. A 1200x1200mm skylight can transform a dark, oppressive kitchen into a light-filled space.
Heritage Considerations
Many inner Sydney terrace precincts (Paddington, Newtown, Glebe, Balmain) have Heritage Conservation Area overlays. This typically restricts changes to street-facing facades but allows considerable freedom at the rear. Your designer will know exactly what's possible in your specific suburb.
